Martin Luther King, Jr. was born January 15, 1929 in the upper room of a 2-story home in Atlanta, Ga. The room of his birth overlooked smaller shotgun-style houses in the black working-class neighborhood of Sweet Auburn. From those modest roots grew a man who inspired freedom around the world. The National Day of Service honoring his legacy in civil rights and peace falls on the same day as the presidential inauguration next week.

Since the Obamas will be tied up with inaugural festivities on Monday, the First Lady asks the public to join her in a National Day of Service on Saturday, Jan. 19.

“Four years ago,” the First Lady said, “during his first inauguration, Barack and I were thrilled when thousands of Americans from every corner of the country took part in the National Day of Service honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.”

“We were so excited because we knew that the celebrations weren’t just about a new president but about everything that we can accomplish together. And,” stated the First Lady, “that starts with service.

”Obama and the Presidential Inaugural Committee ask the public to get an early start on MLK Day by hosting events or helping at events that promote health, education, community resilience and economic development, and support faith, the environment, and veterans and their families.
