Embattled Missouri Republican Todd Akin has asked for forgiveness in a new ad amid a furious campaign by his own party to force the congressman to abandon his Senate bid by 5 p.m. over comments he made about rape and pregnancy.

“Rape is an evil act. I used the wrong words in the wrong way and for that I apologize,” Rep. Akin said in a web ad released to Politico on Tuesday. “As the father of two daughters, I want tough justice for predators. I have a compassionate heart for the victims of sexual assault. I pray for them. The fact is, rape can lead to pregnancy.”

Akin went on to say that, “the truth is, rape has many victims. The mistake I made was in the words I said, not in the heart I hold. I ask for your forgiveness.”

The comments seemed to indicate that Akin was continuing with his campaign ahead of a 5 p.m. deadline to bow out of the race and allow Missouri’s Republican central committee to pick a replacement candidate. He has until Sept. 25 to leave the race, but after today’s deadline could face a challenge from the state’s Democratic secretary of state should he try to bow out, according to The New York Times.
