George Zimmerman made his first court appearance earlier today to face second-degree murder charges in the shooting death of 17-year-old, unarmed Trayvon Martin.

In court documents made public today, Zimmerman pursued Florida teenager Trayvon Martin as he tried to run home and provoked a confrontation before shooting Martin in the chest during a struggle.

May 29th has been set for Zimmerman’s arraignment; in which he plans to plead not guilty to the charge, which carries a maximum sentence of life in prison.
